2012 MSHSAA Show-Me Showdown

March is probably my favorite month of the year as a sports journalist....March Madness takes hold of the country and baseball is gearing up for a new season.

Beginning Thursday morning at the Mizzou Arena and the Hearnes Center in Columbia Missouri Class 1, 2, 3 play their Final Four.  There are four teams from the Heartland just a pair of victories from winning a state title:

Boys Class 1
Scott County Central (20-10)
- Braves have won three consecutive Class 1 Titles

Boys Class 2
Hayti (21-9)
- Making their first trip to the Final Four since 1983.

Boys Class 3
Charleston (29-2)
- Blue Jays finished 3rd last season

Girls Class 1
Eminence (27-1)
- Only defeat this season was a 44-41 loss to Walnut Grove.  The two could meet for a Class 1 Title.

The last time Charleston, Scott CC and Hayti advanced to the Final Four (1983) each won a state championship.

Report: Lowery out as SIU Basketball Coach

There was plenty of speculation SIU head basketball coach Chris Lowery would be not return for his ninth season and according to multiple reports today Lowery is out as head coach.

Athletics Director Mario Moccia is on record saying he will not wait long to make a decision on coach Lowery's future with the team once the season ends.

It ended with a 65-51 loss last night to Indiana State in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.

Lowery, a former Saluki player and assistant coach finished eight seasons at SIU with a overall record of 145-116.

As head coach he lead the Salukis to three NCAA Tournament appearances including a run to the Sweet 16 and one trip to the NIT..but the program has declined of late with four consecutive losing seasons.

According to SIU Media Services Assistant Athletics Director Tom Weber a press conference is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
