All that winning means Alabama fans -- and SEC fans -- are going to pay big for tickets in 2012.

It's that time of year again, when college football fans who don't have season tickets are looking on secondary ticketing websites to buy seats to the most high-profile matchups.

If you're an Alabama fan, it's going to cost you a pretty penny.

Alabama is playing in three of the five most expensive matchups of the college football season, according to TiqIQ, a secondary ticket market search engine.

The most expensive ticket of the season is, not surprisingly, the rematch of last year's BCS title game between the Crimson Tide and the LSU Tigers. TiqIQ currently lists the average price for a ticket to the Nov. 3 game at $632.71. Alabama's opener versus Michigan at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, comes in at No. 2 on TiqIQ's most expensive games to attend. An average seat to that game is $595.42, though fans can now find a cheaper option, as discount site LivingSocial.com started offering a standing room "ticket" package that includes a hot dog, chips and a soda for $89 last week. More than 2,000 of those tickets have since been purchased. Alabama's Iron Bowl game versus Auburn comes in at No. 5 with an average listing price of $481.66, according to TiqIQ.

John A. Logan Hoops Coach Retires

Logan hoop coach, Imhoff, calls it quits;
was all-time wins leader at JALC with 337

BY JOHN D. HOMAN
Logan Media Services

CARTERVILLE – John A. Logan men’s basketball coach Mark Imhoff announced his retirement Tuesday, effective the end of this month.
Courtesy: John A. Logan College
Imhoff, 55, cited mainly business reasons for making his decision to step away from his longtime post. He compiled an overall record of 337-200 over the last 17 years, the most in school history.
Under his leadership, the Volunteers captured two Great Rivers Athletic Conference titles (2007 and 2010) and two Region 24 championships (1999 and 2000).
A Murphysboro native, Imhoff previously served as an assistant to Tom Ashman for 10 years at Logan.

"Obviously, there are a number of factors involved in making a decision to retire," Imhoff said. "For me, I'm a bubble guy in this state pension system and we are all aware that the system has some serious uncertainties for the future.
"I'm 32 years involved in this system and have reached a point in time where I could retire."

Imhoff said he spent many months weighing the pros and cons of retirement.
"This is not something you decide in a week to 10 days. There has been some thought put into this," he said. "I feel very fortunate to say I got to make a career out of the game of basketball. My father was a coach and it's all I ever wanted to do, too. And to do it for 32 years...well, as I said, I have been very fortunate."

Imhoff said he will undoubtedly go through coaching withdrawals.

"Yeah, but that would come about whether I leave today or 10 years from today. I think the timing is right for me to step down."

Imhoff said the passion to coach still burns within him, which is why he would not rule out the possibility of coaching elsewhere sometime down the road.

"You don't want to back yourself into a corner, so you never say never, right? Believe me, that fire is not going to subside immediately. It won't because coaching is very competitive. It gets in your blood."

Imhoff said he is proud of the program's successes in his 27 years with the Logan program.

"Without a doubt," he said. "I have too much invested with this program not to be proud. When I inherited the team from Coach Ashman more than 17 years ago, I inherited a strong program. And that was motivation enough for me to keep it that way. I would like to think that our program is respected around the country because of the way we went about business.

"I know that I can leave with the peace of mind that this program will continue to prosper after I leave," Imhoff said. "It also means a lot to me that John A. Logan College basketball has been influenced by Murphysboro Red Devil basketball for the past 30-plus years."

Both Ashman and Imhoff are Murphysboro High grads.
Imhoff said he will miss the associations he has developed over the years with fellow coaches, former players, students and staff.

"When I look back on my experience here, I am forever indebted to Coach Ashman for giving me the opportunity to be a part of his program and for his support, as well as then athletic director, John Sala, and then later Jerry (current athletic director, Halstead), who I also consider a dear friend.

"I've had the opportunity to work with some fabulous people at Logan," Imhoff said. "There's a reason why the school has prospered over the years. It's because of the people that work there who have put the time in to make the college the success that it is today.

"As for the kids, there have been hundreds of them," Imhoff said. "Again, I have been fortunate to have some outstanding young men come through here, who bought into our system of doing things, and have taken that knowledge to become better basketball players at the next level, and more important, productive members of society."

JALC Athletic Director Jerry Halstead said he will indeed miss having Imhoff around to lead the basketball program.

"He's been the mainstay here for years, a solid coach and employee. It's certainly going to be different without him."

Halstead said Imhoff's decision to retire had been discussed for some time.
"It's something we've talked about for the last eight months or so. Mark was ready for last season to end. He was getting to the end of the candle so to speak and I think the financial ramifications of it all with the state made his decision to retire that much easier. There comes a time with everyone when it's time to quit. And at the end of the day, I think Mark knew it was time for him."

Halstead said he has already begun fielding queries from coaches about the open position and hopes that a hiring committee will be in place within just a matter of days.

"We're in the middle of recruiting season here with basketball, so there is a lot of work to be done. Zach (assistant coach, Carpenter) will have to be the guy for a month or so until we get a new head coach."

This year marks the second year in a row that Logan has had a disruption in the men's basketball program (assistant Kyle Smithpeters was hired last summer to serve on the staff at Missouri State University).

"We're losing a good one in Mark, but we'll just have to make the best of it," Halstead said.

Imhoff said he has no new business ventures to attend to, no special trips to make, no immediate plans.

"Just golf and cigars for now," he joked.

Braves select a pair of Redhawks

Simmons and Moses Drafted by Atlanta Braves

(SEMO Sports Information)

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Right-handed pitcher Shae Simmons and third baseman Trenton Moses were teammates at Southeast Missouri. Now, it appears their paths will cross again as both were selected by the Atlanta Braves     Wednesday during the final day of the Major League Baseball Draft.

Simmons was chosen in the 22nd round (689th overall) and Moses was picked in the 26th round (809th overall), becoming Southeast's 15th and 16th all-time draft picks, respectively.

They are the first Redhawks to be drafted by the same organization since Jeremy Johnson and Daniel Huesgen went in the 26th and 38th rounds to the Toronto Blue Jays in 2000.

Players often experiences a series of emotions come draft time, and things were no different for Simmons.

“I was sitting in my living room, and as soon as I got up and walked away from my computer, my phone started ringing,” said Simmons. “I first got a phone call from my advisor and then got a call from a Braves scout. It was really exciting.”

A Second-Team All-Ohio Valley Conference honoree, Simmons went 7-4 with a 4.50 ERA in 15 starts this season. He led the Redhawks in wins, strikeouts (89) and innings pitched (82.0). Simmons, who appeared in 10 games as Southeast's No. 2 starter, led the OVC in strikeouts with nearly 10 per contest (9.77).

Moses was recently named a Second-Team Louisville Slugger All-American by     Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.

The 2012 OVC Player of the Year, Moses became just the third player in conference history to win that prestigious award in multiple seasons. He led the league in batting average (.408), home runs (19), on-base percentage (.531) and slugging percentage (.761) this year. Moses led the nation in both slugging and on-base percentage, as well.

“I was watching the computer with my family and heard my name called on the internet,” said Moses. “I was pretty excited and it is cool to be drafted by the same team that Shae was.”

Both Simmons and Moses could sign with the Braves as early as Thursday.

Thanks for 15 great years!

Today I close one door on my broadcasting career and walk through another.  After 15 years in the news  department at KFVS 12 I will present my final sportscast on Heartland News tonight at ten.

Beginning Monday I officially make the move into the KFVS 12 Sales / Marketing department.

It really doesn't seem possibly I have been here 15 years!  It only feels like yesterday I drove across the old Cape bridge in a lightly packed moving van anxious to dive head first into "Heartland Sports".

The opportunity I was given in early March of 1997 by former New Director Mike Beecher has surpassed anything I ever imagined.  I met my beautiful wife Christi, her totally hip parents, made a ton of new friends, worked in a never-a-dull-moment newsroom with a lively cast of characters and covered some of the more exciting events in sports:

  • Cardinals winning two World Series titles
  • The 1999 Rams - "The Greatest Show on Turf "
  • Two SIU basketball trips to the Sweet 16
  • SEMO advancing to the programs first D-1 NCAA Basketball Tournament
  • The improbable 2010 Redhawk football team winning an OVC Championship
  • Countless MSHSAA State tiles for Scott County Central
  • Great players like Tyler Hansbrough, Otto Porter, William Moore, Kent Williams, Ryan Willen, Blake DeWitt and Mario Whitney...The list is endless.

Live at Busch Stadium 2011 World Series

I accomplished a professional goal I set for myself as an undergrad at the University of Toledo...anchor sports in a top 100 market within 3 years of graduating.  Becoming Sports Director at WHIO the CBS affiliate in my hometown of Dayton, OH (my next goal) was put on hold quickly after moving to Cape Girardeau.  I fell in love with the Rive City.  I have now lived here longer than any one particular city or town.

I never came close to my ultimate goal of taking over as the voice of the Cincinnati Reds (hey...you have to dream).

One minute I'm questioning my decision to move from News to Sales and the next I'm excited and ready for the new challenge.  Ultimately I believe it was a choice I needed to make.  I get a shot at a more normal life...better hours and nights, weekends and holidays to spend with family and friends.  In nearly two decades of TV news I have never (on a regular basis) enjoyed those perks.
The last 15 years would not have been possibly without the help of dozens of co-workers (past & present...a big high-five to Sports Director Todd Richards) and you...the loyal KFVS viewer....and reader of this blog...which I will continue to update.

I can't thank you enough. I'm truly humbled.

Blake DeWitt designated for assignment

According to mutiple reports the Chicago Cubs designated Blake DeWitt for assignment in order to make room for pitcher Travis Wood.

The Sikeston, Missouri native (DeWitt)  has struggled this season hitting just .138 with 29 at bats in 18 games.

The Cubs have 10 days to trade DeWitt or grant him his outright release.

Reports suggest the Cubs organization hopes he clears waivers and takes the assignment to triple-a Iowa. They believe he needs regular playing time.

DeWitt avoided arbitration in the off-season by signing a $1.1 million contract.

Top 10 MLB Players Homes For Sale

Looking for a new home?  I saw this at www.toptenrealestatedeals.com.
Happy shopping!

--- --- ---

With Opening Day on the horizon, the biggest names in baseball are ready to depart Florida or Arizona, head north and get ready for the start of the regular season. The rigors of a 162-game season can be tough for anyone, but a bad real estate market can be a big strike out for athletes who are more likely to be moving on to other cities and homes because of trades, retirement, or finding a state with low taxes. Throw in the fact that most of these guys are young with multi-million dollar homes, selling that big fancy home can be as difficult as hitting a Mariano Rivera cutter. For baseball players, hitting a home run is a lot easier on the baseball field than it is when it comes to real estate. Here are ten former and current players who are trying to hit a home run off the field.

As these players prepare for the upcoming season or whatever is in store for those who are retired, they also have a lot on their plate off the field. For these ten current and former players hitting it big between the lines is very important, but striking a big deal off the field with their home sale is also part of the game.

This former Rookie of the Year, All-Star and World Series champion had a successful 14-year Major League career from 19887-2000. He played for four different teams and had over 1,200 hits. He spent the middle of his career with the Colorado Rockies from 1994-1997. His home in nearby Castle Rock, Colorado is now up for sale and valued at $3.999 million.

The highlight of this home is the large baseball diamond in the backyard and the indoor batting cage. With perfectly manicured grass and dirt around each base, Walt has a state-of-the-art ball diamond with a big league feel to it. In his backyard! The property is set on 73 acres and is 10,668 square feet. With multiple swimming pools, a full basketball court and a beautiful mountain view, this house is an outdoor delight. There are six bedrooms and eight baths along with a seven car garage. The batting cage on the inside of the home tops it off.

Barry Larkin
As the most recently inducted member into the baseball Hall of Fame, Barry Larkin had one of the best careers of any shortstop in baseball history. Larkin spent all 19 of his major league seasons with the Cincinnati Reds and was the first 30-30 (30 home runs and 30 stolen bases) shortstop in the history of baseball. He was a local kid, born and raised in Cincinnati. While he called Cincinnati home his entire life, Larkin currently resides in Orlando, Florida in a $10.9 million mansion that is up for sale.

This 14,500 square foot home is built on 2.8 acres on the amazing Lake Chase. The fun here begins outside as there is a lighted tennis court, outdoor basketball court, four-boat dock and a three jet-ski dock. There is also a full outdoor kitchen with a theater and fireplace. Moving inside, there are 13 bathrooms and six bedrooms. Among the activities on the inside is a disco lounge, private gym, pool, spa, full bar and a stage room. One of the best aspects of this house is the view of Lake Chase at sunset and nightly fireworks from Disney and Universal which can be seen from almost anywhere on the property.

Adrian Beltre

Entering his second season in a Texas Rangers uniform, Adrian Beltre remains one of the best third basemen in the American League. He has gone over 100 RBI’s each of the past two seasons and was an All-Star in those two years. He will be entering his 14th MLB season with his fourth team. Beltre spent his first seven season in the majors with the Los Angeles Dodgers. His home in Bradbury, just 30 minutes outside of Los Angeles, is valued at $19.8 million.

The mansion is situated on 4.16 acres with 16 bathrooms and seven bedrooms. It is located in the gated community of the Bradbury Estates. This Mediterranean-style home has a circular driveway with a breathtaking entry-way consisting of a 35’ painted ceiling. The inside has a rec room with a batting cage. There is an eight-car garage, a private pool and a spectacular view of the city. The home also has a 2,500 square foot guest house with three beds and two baths. Outside, there are golf greens, a tennis court and a basketball court.

Jonathan Papelbon
After spending his first seven Major League seasons with the Boston Red Sox, Jonathan Papelbon is now entering his first season in Philadelphia with the Phillies. He was an All-Star four consecutive seasons from 2006-2009. He has 219 career saves and a 2.33 career earned run average, making him one of the most dominant closers over the past seven years. The four-year $50 million contract Papelbon signed over the winter means his home in Boston is up for sale. The $3.1 million pad on Beacon Street is located real close to Fenway Park.

This penthouse, located in downtown Boston is 2,500 square feet with marble and hardwood flooring as well as custom cabinetry. This four bedroom, three bath also has a nursery with two seats from Fenway Park included. The kitchen is filled with the finest appliances and copper fixtures. There is access to a roof, via an elevator where there are two deck tops. One of the decks has a hot tub overlooking the Charles River Basin and the downtown area.

Matt Cain
As one of the most dominating pitchers in the National League, Matt Cain helped lead the San Francisco Giants to the 2010 World Series Championship. He was an All-Star in 2009 and 2011. He made his Major League debut in 2005 at the age of 20 and has spent all six of his Major League seasons with the Giants. He has a career 3.35 ERA with 69 wins in six full seasons. His home in downtown San Francisco has a listing price of $1.795 million.

With floor-to-ceiling windows and some amazing views of the bay, this four bedroom and three bath home is 2,815 square feet. It offers a kitchen that has been completely updated along with a solarium. The home, built in 1968 is located in the Diamond Heights area and has been completely remodeled on the inside. However it might be too late to purchase this home. Several Bay area agents report that Matt has accepted an offer of $1.8 million for the home - $5,000 over the asking price.

John Smoltz

This eight-time All-Star selection spent 20 of his 21 full seasons with the Atlanta Braves. He won the National League Cy Young award in 1996 and was a World Series champion in 1995. Smoltz began his career as a starting pitcher and finished his career with 213 wins. He also had 154 saves and a career ERA of 3.33. Smoltz is the only player in Major League history to top 200 wins and 150 saves in his career. He spent his final season with the Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals before retiring in 2009. His $7.2 million home in Milton, Georgia is now up for sale.

The mansion is set on 22 acres, and is a dream for anybody interested in sports. Smoltz loves to golf so there is a full 18-hole golf course in his backyard. There is also a baseball diamond, fishing pond, jogging trail, basketball court, football field and tennis court. Upon entry into the 18,265 square foot home, it only gets better. There are 10 bedrooms and 14 baths along with six fireplaces and an eight car garage. The views of the property from all corners of the house are outstanding.

Jamie Moyer

Not many 49-year olds find themselves in a Major League camp on the verge of making a big league squad, but that is what Jamie Moyer is attempting to do this year. Moyer is attempting a comeback with the Colorado Rockies, after missing last season with an injury. He made his major league debut in 1986 with the Chicago Cubs and has spent the last quarter century pitching in the big leagues with seven different teams. Most of his success came between 1996-2006 with the Seattle Mariners. Moyer’s estate in Seattle is currently up for sale and priced at $5.35 million.

This 7,100 square foot estate is set on nearly half an acre. There are seven bedrooms and five baths with three fireplaces. Built in 1933, the outside and inside of the home is brick. There are full length glass windows throughout and hardwood oak floors. The backyard is one of the highlights with a saltwater pool, bath house, croquet yard, batting cage and an outdoor pizza oven.

Nomar Garciaparra

With a .313 career batting average, Nomar Garciaparra is one of the best hitting shortstops in baseball history. He spent the majority of his career with the Boston Red Sox, before spending two years with the Chicago Cubs and three with his hometown Los Angeles Dodgers. He spent his final full season in Oakland with the Athletics. He grew up in Whittier, California and his childhood home is now up for sale. Priced at $595,000, this house has recently been put on the market by Nomar and his wife Mia Hamm.

This Spanish-style home is 2,200 square feet with three bedrooms and two baths. There is a vaulted ceiling with wood beams in the living room. The master bedroom comes equipped with a hot tub and two large closets. The entire inside of the house has recently been completely remodeled. There is also a guest house that has brand new floors and brand new amenities.

Reggie Sanders

Outfielder Reggie Sanders played for eight different teams in his Major League career, the bulk of which were for the Cincinnati Reds. He is one of only six players in Major League history to have over 300 career home runs and 300 career stolen bases. He is also the only player ever to hit 20 home runs with six different teams. He had a .267 career average with 983 RBI’s before retiring for good in 2007. His $2.195 million home is now up for sale in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The 8,000 square foot mansion has six bedrooms and seven baths. Built in 1999, the home is situated on an acre of land in a cul-de-sac of a gated community. There is a spa, waterfall and pool in the backyard. There is a bonus room on the inside with a wet-bar. Also on the inside is a master-chef kitchen and a beautiful den with cherry wood cabinets. It is a split floor that separates guest wings from the family section. The home has various Spanish-style columns and designs throughout the house.

Mark Teixiera

First baseman Mark Teixiera spent his first five seasons with the Texas Rangers . He has won four Gold Gloves, three Silver Sluggers and was an All-Star in 2005 and 2009. After spending five seasons with Texas, Teixiera was with the Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim for two total seasons from 2008-2009. He has spent the past two seasons with the Yankees. His estate has been on and off the market since he left Texas, but is now for sale and priced at $3.995 million.

Located inside of Vaquero Golf Club in Westlake, Texas, this lakefront estate is 8,554 square feet with five bedrooms and eight baths. Also inside the house is a large master suite with a gas fireplace, private patio and hot tub. There is a game room, wet bar home theater and two-level office. Right next to the main home is a one-bedroom guest house. Outside, there is a large patio area with an outdoor kitchen and gas fire pit. A large pool in the backyard tops it all off.

As these players prepare for the upcoming season or whatever is in store for those who are retired, they also have a lot on their plate off the field. For these ten current and former players hitting it big between the lines is very important, but striking a big deal off the field with their home sale is also part of the game.

Former Cardinals outfielder joins rival Cincinnati

Former Cardinals GM Walt Jocketty continues to recycle one time Redbirds in Cincinnati.  Outfielder Ryan Ludwick his latest acquisition.

(AP) Ryan Ludwick and the Cincinnati Reds agreed to a $2.5 million, one-year contract Monday, according to a person with knowledge of the deal.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Monday night because the deal was pending a physical and no announcement had been made by the team.

An All-Star in 2008 with St. Louis, the 33-year-old Ryan Ludwick was traded from San Diego to Pittsburgh at the July 31 deadline last season. He batted a combined .237 with 13 homers and 75 RBIs.

Ludwick could give the Reds the right-handed bat they've been seeking to complement lefty sluggers Joey Votto
and Jay Bruce. He figures to see playing time in left field, a spot filled mostly by Chris Heisey down the stretch last season after Cincinnati traded Jonny Gomes to Washington in late July.
It's the latest move in a busy offseason for the aggressive Reds, who had previously been focused on pitching. Cincinnati acquired starter Mat Latos and left-handed reliever Sean Marshall in separate trades before reaching an oral agreement on an $8.5 million, one-year contract with free-agent closer Ryan Madson.

Ludwick had a $6,775,000 salary last year.
